“Do you try and force that thing to go parabolic again, or do you focus on building the right business?”
James Clift built an AI website builder in a week, a month before ChatGPT came out. It went from nothing to a million users in three months. He worked on it for another year and a half, then killed it.
He went back to Durable, the business he'd wanted to build all along. You describe what you do in a text box, and agents build the site, handle the SEO, chase the leads, and send the invoices. 3.5 million people have signed up.
He's had co-founders before. Going solo, he says, took pressure off rather than adding it. “If there's a co-founder, I actually feel like I have to make them happy, take care of them. Now this person's family is my job.”
Julian asks him about the call to shut down a product a million people were using, and whether he'd make it the same way again.
